The 2 day ( Oct 9/10/09 ) CBFTA trial held in Delmer Seals fox pen started off with 19 eager
entries being cast in the early morning sunrise. The glitter of the red leafs of the hard maple
trees combined with the golden hue of the soft maples mixed with the greenish ground
juniper bushes made a picture perfect setting for the most intense trial since the CBFTA's
inception in 1994.
Yes, only 19 entries, but they proved to be the cream of this years crop of young
competitors. Multiple crossings were recorded by all judges, along with some outstanding
check scores to boot. Mr Fox bursting out from the ground junipers brush in full flight and
darting off 90 degrees down the hard packed clay trails in an attempt to trick the pursuing
pack, failed time and time again as the dogs solved the fox's twists and turns in quick time.
When the final horn of the first days running blew and the results tabulated 15 of the entries
had 1st place drive scores. Five dogs were credited with solving at least one check each.
Leading the way was Slack's Dora with a total of 815 judges score points, followed by Slack's
Energizer with 650 point and Roy's Happyrun Zoomer in third place with 560 points.
These 3 dogs continued to set a torrid pace on the 2nd day's additional 4 hour run which
consisted of 16 Saturday survivors. Dora held onto 1st place with 1200 points, a mere 5
points margin over 2nd place Zoomer, while Energizer finished next with 1045 points.
Again 15 of the 16 entries had 1st place drive scores, plus multiple check scores, setting a
new all time field combination scoring record. Several judges felt the foxes were the
collective first place winners as they put on a tremendous display of their abilities to out fox
the dogs while providing the judges with ease of scoring.
