APRIL 10 - The first trial of 2010 was a beautiful day with excellent running. 46 hounds
were entered...second in size only to the International trial which saw 47 entries.
We were graced by many new faces attending from all over. Jay Hall joined us from New
York (Dan Kane introduced Jay to a bit of Irish Whisky the night before. Try to keep up,
Jay!)
This trial was a special one for several reasons, but the most important being this first
trial of the year and future years was designated as the Roy Mays, Jr. Memorial Derby
Trial. Roy Jr. passed away unexpectedly in March. He was family to the CBFTA -- raised
in the sport from a young lad, always had very competitive dogs, he was a good judge
and a hard worker. He will be greatly missed.
The running was fast and furious; Mr Fox used the entire pen, straight stretching from
the north end to the south, darting through the junipers, dodging through the hard
woods, and the dogs kept Mr Fox moving, leaving him little time to plan his next move.
While the scores were being tallied, Derrick Brazier supplied our tail gate
lunch...venison souvalaki and peameal bacon on a bun with all the fixings. After lunch,
the 2009 year end awards were presented by President Roy Mays; the trial winners
were awarded by Dan Kane and Derrick Brazier.
There were Derby dogs placing in both All Age Categories and Derby Trial, some really
good up and comers! The winning dog had 510 judges' points, almost all dogs had
score, and all the Derby's scored well. they are a strong bunch this year.
We would like to recognize Dan Kane and Derrick Brazier for their tireless work in
planning such a great event.
