“Whose big idea was it for the 5AM cast” was the
question of the day. Mine answered, Master of Hounds,
Dan Kane, “Sorry but I couldn't predict the *******
weather” he said as he wiped the pouring rain from his
brow.

What a terrible wet unexpected start it was to a day which
was predicted to be in the high 80's F Nevertheless, the 5
AM cast of 24 eager-to-roll beagles was soon underway
on this a very wet and dark morning.

Seeing the dogs numbers proved to be difficult for at
least the better part of the first hour. The sound of the
chase, however, was music to the hardy judges who
stood shivering against the driving rain, waiting to score
a crossing of Mr. Red Fox.

"What makes the fox run in such ungodly weather?"
asked newcomer Dave Flear. The only reasonable
answer offered was, “He enjoys the chase as much as
we and the dogs do. " replied old-timer Harold Hannah.
Next comment heard from a nearby grumbling
unidentified judge was, “He (the fox), must be as nuts as
we are, too!”
Scoring wasn't as easy as in past trials, but the chase was feverishly intense as the fox was
using every bit of the 100 acres......North and South, again & again went the pack with one
dog after another leading the chase. When all the scoring was tabulated there were 10
individual dogs with 1st place drive scores, and 9 of the same dogs had 2nd place drive
scores, with 8 of them also scored in 3rd place in a drive. The top 5 dogs jam packed the
leader board, but Freedom Run Clem's Apache emerged with his first win by a margin of 65
points over his nearest rival, Beagle Fox Trial Winner Slacks Dora. By the trial's end a new
record was established. Seven different campaigners now needed only a second win to
become Beagle Fox Champions ( BFC). The overall quality of trial entries is obviously at a
very high standard.

There are no soft wins in the CBFTA. It takes a tough consistent clean mouth line running,
eager to win type to survive the rigors of beagle on fox trialing. Although the trial was
scheduled for the usual 4 hours the last dogs were caught up running at the 5 1/2 hour mark.
Rain-soaked as the Beaglers were, they didn't hesitate to make short work of Dave & Mrs.
Flear's tail gate lunch. LUNCH.....WHAT A MEAL! Hot pulled pork, baked beans, corn on the
cob, buns and watermelon for dessert. All this before the results were announced kept the
Beaglers happily huddled in the now drizzly rain as the day wore on.

BACK TO:
Have a safe and happy summer!
See you in the fall!
Rounds of applause followed as
each placement was announced
by Master of Ceremonies Derek
Brazier, assisted by Harold
Hannah. The loudest applause
was for the winning dog as the
CBFTAer's, recognized Apache
as being Bev Cross's first bred
Beagle on Fox trial winner.

Bev is our USA member who
resides 800 miles away in
Indianapolis but is only
moments away from the CBFTA
activities. Former publisher of
The American Beagler Magazine,
she continues to do many and
any chores for the betterment of
the hunting beagle and the sport
in general --  regardless of the
country, the format, or the quarry
in the chase.
The results are as follows:
Father and Daughter - Team Guido!
Beagler Larry Molson enjoyed the day with us.
Seasoned Judges Dan Kane and Harold Hanna answering questions and giving us a recap on judging.
